Vanessa Hudgens to star in LA production of ‘Rent’

After graduating from High School Musical, female lead Vanessa Hudgens is stepping up to the plate to perform in a gritty role in one of the most iconic musicals ever.

Several online reports reported this weekend that Hudgens will be starring as the HIV-positive S&M performer Mimi in Jonathan Larson’s rock opera Rent, for a three-night-only run at Hollywood Bowl.

The engagement will take place at the Los Angeles venue from August 6-8 and will be directed by Neil Patrick Harris, who co-stars with Hudgens in the upcoming feature film Beastly.

“She came in for a work session, and I must say, Vanessa really impressed,” Harris said, according to BroadwayWorld.com. “She looks amazing, has great vocal chops, and seems really committed to honoring the somewhat iconic role of Mimi. I look forward to audiences seeing a dark, edgy, and very different side of Vanessa Hudgens this August.”

Harris himself starred in the 1997 LA production of the show and in the national tour as filmmaker Mark Cohen.

No other castings have been announced yet.

I love Rent, and I’m thrilled for Ms. Hudgens for being part of this very exciting project. But as someone who isn’t really a fan of her voice or her acting, I’m not sure how I feel about her taking on such a big role. Also, honestly, it’s still tough for me to think of her as anything but the “good girl” from the High School Musical movies. I’m hoping she somehow impresses with this performance anyway. Thoughts?
