Live long and prosper: Leonard Nimoy set to retire

I have to be honest and say…oh, Leonard Nimoy – despite your 79 years of life and 60 years of acting, this new fan of the Star Trek franchise still feels like she has more to know about ye and is sad to see you bid adieu.

Nimoy told the Toronto Sun earlier this week that he plans to step off the stage and off camera for good, following his final appearance in FOX’s Fringe, produced by J.J. Abrams, who also directed Nimoy as an older version of his iconic role as Spock in last year’s Star Trek.

So don’t expect to see Nimoy in any of the big-screen sequels. He said, “I don’t think it would be fair to Zachary Quinto,” referring to the Heroes star who portrayed the young Spock on the big screen. “He’s a terrific actor, he looks the part, and it’s time to give him some space. And I’m very flattered the character will continue.”

Nimoy continued, “I love the idea of going out on a positive note. I’ve had a great, great time.”

Retirement for Nimoy also means bowing out of the sci-fi convention circuit. At press time, he was still scheduled to appear at Calgary’s Comic and Entertainment Expo this weekend, which may be his last (or one of his last) public appearances.

Though he is retiring from acting, Nimoy plans to continue his work in photography, citing an upcoming exhibition in Massachusetts.

Even more, Nimoy recently discovered the joys of Twitter. Follow him @TheRealNimoy – seriously, his Tweets are real gems!

He’s had a long and very fruitful entertainment career that I’m sure he’s more than proud of and now only deserves to enjoy life. As cliche as it is, it’s rather fitting that we salute Leonard Nimoy and say “Live long and prosper.”
