BAFTA Rising Star nominees announced

Andrew Garfield, pictured here in an outtake from a 'Details' magazine photoshoot released today, is one of the five nominees for the BAFTA's Orange Wednesdays Rising Star award.

The five nominees for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts’ (BAFTA) Orange Wednesdays Rising Star Award have been selected from a longlist of eight and were announced today. They are Gemma Arterton, Andrew Garfield, Tom Hardy, Aaron Johnson, and Emma Stone.

The Orange Wednesdays Rising Star Award is the only BAFTA honor voted on by the British public. Residents of Britain can vote for their favorite actor on the Orange BAFTA website and via text.

For the selection process, BAFTA members and leading industry insiders proposed a longlist of rising stars who have appeared in several feature films, with at least one released during the current awards season. The longlist was then cut down to eight and for the first time in the awards’ history, Orange Wednesdays customers selected the final five that have made the ballot, “recognizing five international actors and actresses whose talent has captured the imagination of the British public,” per the award nominees press release.

Kristen Stewart was the winner of last year’s award, and previous winners include James McAvoy, Eva Green, Shia LaBeouf, and Noel Clarke.

“It is so important to involve the general public in helping us determine the stars of the future, which is why the Orange Wednesdays Rising Star Award is such a fantastic initiative,” said Finola Dwyer, Orange Wednesdays Rising Star Award jury chair and chair of BAFTA’s Film Committee. “Our final five are truly representative of the rising stars who are capturing film fans’ hearts and minds.”

The Orange Wednesdays Rising Star Award was created in honor of BAFTA-winning casting director, Mary Selway, who passed away in 2004. With a career spanning over three decades, Selway worked with some of the most well-known directors in Hollywood, such as Steven Spielberg and Clint Eastwood. Films she worked on include Return of the Jedi, Love Actually, and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

The winner of the award will be announced at the BAFTA Awards on Feb. 13.

  1. All of this year’s nominees are very strong candidates. It’ll be interesting to see which breakout star wins the award. Personally, I’m rooting for Tom Hardy. I have a feeling that we’ll be seeing a lot from this talented group in years to come!

    1. Tom Hardy for me too, obviously! 😉 I like the group of people nominated though — I don’t know much about Gemma Arterton and Aaron Johnson, but from reading their bios, it seems like they are quite accomplished. It’s also very interesting that Andrew and Emma will both be starring in the Spider Man reboot and both received nominations!
