42nd NAACP Image Awards nominees

Tyler Perry leads the pack with 19 nominations for the 42nd NAACP Image Awards. The winner of last year’s NAACP Chairman’s Award, Perry has two films nominated in the Outstanding Motion Picture category: For Colored Girls and Why Did I Get Married Too? Perry is nominated for Outstanding Director in a Motion Picture for For Colored Girls and his screenplay for Why Did I Get Married Too? is an Outstanding Writing for a Motion Picture nominee. Additionally, his TV series Tyler Perry’s House of Payne is nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series.

Many of his nominations, however, are for the actors starring in his films and series, including Janet Jackson for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture for Why Did I Get Married Too? and David Mann and LaVan Davis for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series and Cassi Davis for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series, all for House of Payne.

Perry’s two films will be competing against Just Wright, The Book of Eli, and The Kids Are All Right in the Outstanding Motion Picture category.

In music, Kanye West, Smokey Robinson, Usher, Sade, and John Legend and the Roots are up for Outstanding Album. The five nominees for Outstanding New Artist are B.o.B, Bruno Mars, Jason Derulo, Nicki Minaj, and Willow.

The NAACP Image Awards is presented to celebrate the accomplishments of people of color in film, television, music, and literature. The awards also honors individuals and groups who promote social justice through creative activism.

The 42nd NAACP Image Awards will be presented in a live telecast on March 4 on FOX.
