Anne Hathaway cast as Selina Kyle/Catwoman in ‘The Dark Knight Rises,’ plus Tom Hardy’s role is revealed

Anne Hathaway is becoming quite the hot Hollywood commodity. In addition to the long-known reports of her co-hosting this year’s Academy Awards with James Franco, it was announced on Sunday evening after the Golden Globes that she’ll be guest-starring on an episode of Glee. Now this morning, Warner Bros. announced that Hathaway has landed the role of Selina Kyle opposite Christian Bale in Christopher Nolan‘s final installment of the Batman series, The Dark Knight Rises.

Hathaway was part of a short list of actresses vying for the lead female role in the film, published in The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision last week. Other actresses that tested reportedly included Jessica Biel, Keira Knightley, Kate Mara, and Charlotte Riley.

The statement did not explicitly list Hathaway’s role as “Catwoman,” nor has it been revealed how the character will be written. Nolan and his writers are said to have taken inspiration from the Batman: Year One storyline by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli for the last two Batman films.

Additionally, Warner Bros. also revealed that Tom Hardy, who was cast in the film back in October, will be playing the villain Bane, an escaped prisoner who becomes abnormally strong after being pumped with drugs. In fact, he is best known in the fandom for breaking Batman’s back in the comics.

The Dark Knight Rises is looking to start shooting in May in London and Los Angeles and is slated for release on July 20, 2012.
