Throwback Thursday – Week 3

Sorry guys…I’m trying. 🙂

Union Square Noob

Can you believe there was actually a time in my life when “The City” was a foreign land to me? I’ve lived here since 2003, but still went to high school in South San Francisco. I didn’t go out that much, I didn’t have a driver’s license, and public transit was a terrifying thought at 15. All I knew were the comfortable suburban confines of South City and Daly City.

A couple of weeks before my graduation in 2006, my English teacher Ms. Lipman took us all out to dinner at Lefty O’Doul’s. We had time to kill so we got to explore Union Square. Really, it’s just a bunch of upscale shops that face each other and make a square where people congregate in. But it was one of the most well-known spots in San Francisco and I was standing in it! It was an exciting moment to actually be in “The City” for real.

After high school, I stopped being so scared of venturing out into San Francisco and have had many, many epic journeys here (Not to mention I did end up going to SAN FRANCISCO State University for college after all). It’s not weird to me anymore that I see Union Square and Japantown (Another place in SF that intrigued me in my younger years) and the downtown skyline so often in my everyday life. I’d be a sheltered, sad girl without those commuter college days.

And that’s how my loving relationship with San Francisco officially started.

  1. Woah! I’m really loving the template/theme of this site. It’s
simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s tough to get that “perfect balance” between superb usability and visual appearance. I must say that you’ve done a
fantastic job with this. Additionally, the blog loads
extremely fast for me on Firefox. Outstanding Blog!
