Hello strangers! At least some of you are. Again, I apologize that my blogging has been so sporadic, but life has been crazy. I started a new job recently (!), took up a few freelance writing gigs, reunited with a few old friends, and I’m in love with my boyfriend more than ever. I know we’re about halfway into the new year, but I just wanted to do a final wrap-up of my 2014 on my blog and make it official, and as a way of saying “Hey, I’m back!” I think it almost goes without saying that last year was one of the best years of my life and I’m thankful for how it went and for all the people who were a part of it and for every experience I had, good and bad.
So here you go. Twelve of my favorite images from the year and the heartbreaks and joys I felt and experienced. 2014 Karen-Style!
I rung in 2014 with my sweetheart at a bar near his house. That was pretty much the highlight of January, plus celebrating with my sister for her 22nd birthday.
My grandma (Mom’s mom) turned 90! M and I celebrated our first Valentine’s Day together a week early in Santa Rosa, and again with a home-cooked meal and drinks at his place on actual Valentine’s Day. Kristine, one of my best friends from high school, came back from dental schooling in the Philippines, thus the band was back together. At the end of the month, I visited California’s Central Coast for the first time with my boyfriend as we celebrated his brother and sister-in-law’s birthdays.
#NewBabyBuggy mania! My friend Emilbert’s Wheel of Fortune episode aired and the local Daly City guy quickly turned into an international Internet celebrity with his epic final solve.
As another San Francisco Giants season descended upon us, I met new starting pitcher Tim Hudson at an autograph signing thanks to an SF Giants Fans Twitter contest!
I celebrated my brother and my cousin Shelly graduating from college. Did the Bay to Breakers party thing for the first time ever. Went to another Backstreet Boys concert. At the end of the month, I left my job of two-and-a-half years at Cardpool to embark on a new working girl journey.
I started my new filler job as a data entry/document review clerk at Uber HQ and couldn’t be more thankful for the opportunity to work in the city, where I belonged.
I missed my co-workers at Cardpool too much, so I gathered a bunch of us at Butter for a mini-reunion to remember.
Though saddened by the sudden losses of American Idol alum Michael Johns (I was a huge fan of season 7, the season he was on) and legendary actor Robin Williams, I celebrated life in August with trips to Vegas with my sister and best friend and Disneyland with my family and of course, my 26th birthday.
I was convinced that I was a curse to the Giants all season long, but they ended up winning the last three or four games I went to this month, including clinching an NL Wild Card berth.
In this traditionally spooky month, I had the most terrifying experience of my life as I was involved in a minor pedestrian-automobile collision at a busy SF intersection, but it made me more thankful for being alive, well, and surrounded by love. In retrospect, it was a small damper in an otherwise very, very happy month. October was truly Orange as I breathed and bled playoff baseball and celebrated my San Francisco Giants’ third World Series championship in five years on Haight Street. Halloween was the happiest as confetti and rain fell down on Market Street once again, and M and I spent the weekend house-sitting in Wine Country.
This month was truly all about loving and living. Within a week, there was a wedding (My cousin Richie and his bride Kathy), a child’s first birthday party (My cousin Joanne and her husband’s son), and a memorial service (Richie and his brother James’ dad) all on my dad’s side of my family. Even in mourning death, we celebrate life, and there are those other life milestones that remind of us why we smile. It strangely just felt like things were coming full-circle, then I celebrated a milestone of my own.
After over three frustrating years of job hunting, I finally landed and started my first big-girl job! I became a Community Manager at MyLikes.com and so far, it’s been fun and smooth-sailing. The boyfriend and I went down to Fresno for his family’s Christmas party the weekend before and we celebrated with my family here in the Bay Area on Christmas Eve and Christmas day. Then we said goodbye to a wonderful 2014 and kissed hello to 2015.
Finally, although I hate keeping New Year’s “resolutions,” I like to make a list of things I’d like to do or achieve each year. Here’s what I pulled out of my butt for 2015!
1. Pay off my student credit card (Which was on my list last year so I obviously didn’t meet that goal, but I swear I’m almost there!).
2. Travel somewhere outside of California but not Nevada (If all goes well, this might actually end up happening next week!).
3. Be a better blogger (Seriously, for real this time).
4. Cook more.
5. Unsubscribe to unnecessary email lists and transfer things to a new “junk” email address, because the fact that I’m still using my high school and SFSU email addresses is wack!
6. Take up ballet and yoga classes.
7. Overcome all the obstacles related to renting an apartment in SF, and actually rent an apartment in SF. (LOL me)
To me being a better blogger and a more fabulous person, and to you having the best year of your life. Happy belated 2015, and welcome back abroad!
